Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation is a very commonly performed surgery, and has been routine since the 1960s.  The purpose of the surgery is to increase the size of the breast, and accentuate the feminine contour of the chest. There are multiple approaches to increasing breast size, ranging from using your own fat harvested from your trunk, to placement of silicone or saline implants.  The placement of implants gives the most predictable and immediate result, where as breast augmentation with fat grafting may require multiple visits to the operating room in order to achieve the desired end result. Breast implants are safe, and have been subjected to rigorous evaluation by the FDA.

During your visit in clinic you will have the opportunity to use a breast implant sizing kit to determine your goal breast size. You are encouraged to bring a soft bra without padding. You will then slip the breast sizing devices, which are like breast pads, over your breast in your soft bra without padding. This will give you an immediate idea of what your breast will look like after augmentation.  Once you have chosen your desired size, I will then evaluate your breast and order implants best suited to achieve your goal. If the size is unrealistic, I will adjust your expectations.  If we try to place an implant too large for your breast, there is a high probability of problematic healing, stretchmarks on the skin, and an un-natural appearance.  My goal is to give you a natural appearing, full breast.

Implant based breast augmentation is performed in the operating room with you asleep.  An opening is made in the skin under the breast, and the implant is placed under the glandular tissue of the breast. A medication is administered in the operative site during surgery that makes the surgical site numb for approximately three days.  The level of discomfort is minimal, generally only requiring over-the-counter pain medications. You can return to activities of daily life except for heavy lifting within 3 days of surgery.
