Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, is an intervention aimed at removing excess lax skin on the eyelids. Usually the indication for this procedure is difficulty with the upper and lateral field of view, which is obscured by the sagging skin. In some instances, people seek eyelid lifts to address a puffy appearance of the upper lids, and dark bags under the eyes.

In my experience, blepharoplasty is effective in changing how well you see, and has a minimal impact on how you look.  In other words, the changes in the lower lids, which generally do not affect your vision can usually, be addressed with methods that do not involve cutting the skin. Removal of the upper eyelid excess is only visually noticeable when your eyes are closed, and it is hard to look at yourself with your eyes closed! You can expect an improvement in your visual fields, but it is unlikely people you know will recognize a change in your appearance.

The procedure can be performed in the surgery center, or in clinic. This depends on your level of comfort.  In clinic we make the eyelids numb and complete the procedure in approximately 25 minutes. In the surgery center you receive light sedation in addition to numbing medicine.  You go home the same day, and will be seen the next week to check on your progress, at which time most people have completely recovered. We give detailed post operative instruction to be followed during that week, which you can access here.
