What Is Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) accounts for about 80% of all cases of skin cancer, making it the most common type. More than two million cases are diagnosed in the United States each year. BCC begins in the basal cells found in the bottom layer of the skin's outermost layer (epidermis). Typically appearing as a small, pearly, or flesh-colored bump that may bleed or form a crust, it usually develops on skin exposed to the sun's UV rays. Although generally not life-threatening, BCC can be locally invasive and cause significant damage to surrounding tissues and bone if left untreated.

Who Gets BCC?

Basal cell carcinoma can affect people of any age, gender, or ethnicity. Still, it is more common in people with a history of excessive sun exposure or with light-colored hair, fair skin, and blue or green eyes. Individuals with a family history of skin cancer or a weakened immune system are also at increased risk for developing BCC. People who use tanning beds often have a much higher risk of getting BCC and tend to develop it earlier in life. BCC is especially common on the face, often forming on the nose; however, it is possible to get it on any part of the body, including the trunk, legs, hands, and arms.

Basal Cell Carcinoma Treatment

BCC is most often removed in the doctor’s office as a minor surgical procedure. If not removed, it will continue to grow locally and can cause disfigurement. Once it is completely removed, it will no longer cause any further problems. While this type of skin cancer grows slowly, it rarely spreads to other body parts. Treatment is necessary because BCC can grow wide and deep, destroying skin tissue and bone.
