Acne-More Than Meets the Eye

“Maskne” has become a well known condition over the last year.

Cold Weather is Tough on Skin

Cold weather is tough on skin. Cold temperatures and low humidity levels result in dry air that draws moisture away from the skin. Harsh winter winds and dry indoor heat can make the problem worse and lead to cracked and even bleeding skin. Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis may also flare up during these cold, dry months.

While additional moisture helps, you can do more to treat your skin. Here are some tips to help reduce chapping and redness and keep your skin healthy and comfortable until spring arrives:

  1. Avoid long, hot showers. While a hot bath or shower can feel great in the winter, it can strip your skin of important oils. When possible, use warm or lukewarm water instead, including when you wash your face or hands.
  2. Choose the best winter moisturizer for your skin. The same old moisturizer you use the rest of the year may not cut it during cold and dry months. That said, thicker doesn’t mean better when it comes to moisturizers. If you’re prone to breakouts, you want to stay away from petroleum or oil-based formulas. Look for one that contains lipids instead. Alternatively, if your skin is severely dry, you might try adding an emollient moisturizer that seals in moisture, followed by another moisturizer on top.
  3. Don’t forget the sunscreen. Sunscreen isn’t just for hot summer months. Winter sun, combined with glare from the snow, can seriously damage your skin. Apply sunscreen to your face and hands (if they’re exposed) about 30 minutes before you go outside. Reapply frequently if you stay outside a long time.
  4. Say no to tanning. Many people think a tanning bed can provide the vitamin D they’re lacking during dark, short, cold days, but in fact, the damage a tanning bed can do to your skin far outweighs any temporary boost. Both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation cause cell damage that can lead to skin cancer.
  5. Know your skin. Whether you’re a sun worshipper or vigilant about sun safety, it’s important to examine your skin regularly and take note of any new moles or growths, and any changes in existing growths. Lesions that change, itch, bleed, or don’t heal are also alarm signals. Even if you’ve carefully practiced sun safety all summer, it’s important to continue being vigilant about your skin in fall, winter, and spring. Self-exams can help you identify potential skin cancers early.
  6. Know when to call on an expert. Seeing a dermatologist even once is a good investment. They can analyze your skin type, troubleshoot your current skin care regimen, and give you advice on the skin care products you should be using. They can also provide medication to address specific skin concerns when over-the-counter products aren’t working. And if you notice an concerning changes in your skin, it’s very important to see a dermatologist right away.

2020 Giving Hearts Day – Record Breaking Day

Michael Ebertz Helping raise MoneyGiving Hearts Day was one for the record books for St. John’s Academy. The success of this day was made possible with the matching gift of $20,000 from Dr. Michael & Donna Ebertz. Michael is an alum of St. John’s Academy along with his many siblings, cousins, and his parents, Glory & John Ebertz. Michael & Donna strongly feel Catholic education is vital in the formation of children’s faith lives.

Dr. Michael Ebertz, a founding partner of Skin Care Doctors, P.A., has been a $1250 Sponsor for 14 years for  our Annual HOPE Dinner and Auction. Over the years, Michael & Donna and family members would attend the dinner and auction, and Michael was one of our most faithful bidders for the auction. Dr. Ebertz also established a scholarship, the John & Glory Ebertz Memorial  Scholarship, which was in honor of his late father and mother. This scholarship has grown rapidly and is now $374,000 and is set up in the FACE (Foundation Advancement of Christian Education) Endowment Fund. Each school year this memorial scholarship provides 3 full scholarships to 3 Catholic families who need financial support to attend St. John’s Academy.

It is because of people like Dr. Michael and Donna Ebertz that give us hope for the future of St. John’s Academy. From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU, Dr. Ebertz & Donna, for your generous heart.

5/11 Practice Updates For COVID-19 From Skin Care Doctors

Skin Care Doctors, P.A., and Vein Associates are grateful for the support of our community during this crisis. Our team has been reviewing the revised order from Governor Waltz on May 5th, 2020. Patient and employee safety remains our top concern. Our clinic has been open for in-clinic critical issues as well as telemedicine appointments.

With Governor Walz’s revised order, we may now begin clinically necessary elective appointments and procedures. Each staff member and physician will follow state-ordered PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to protect themselves and their patients.

Every patient will be required to wear a mask. If a patient does not have a mask, we will supply one. We will be taking patient temperatures upon arrival at our office. Any patient with a temperature of 99.5 degrees or higher will need to reschedule their appointment. Alternately, any staff member or physician with a temperature of 99.5 or higher will be sent home. We ask that patients attend their appointments individually unless they are a minor or need assistance; in which case 1 person may accompany them. Every precaution to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is being taken for the safety of our team and patients. All of the CDC & World Health cleaning standards continue to be followed and our waiting room has been set up to follow social distancing guidelines. If you are not comfortable or able to come in for your appointment, a telemedicine appointment may still be an available option for you.

Please call our office if you have any questions, or to make an appointment, 952.898.1600. We will continue to update you here as we all navigate this ever-changing situation.
